Yelawolf is an American rapper from Gadsden, Alabama. Yelawolf was born on
December 30, 1979 as Michael Wayne Atha. He grew up in various places
throughout the south. He spent time in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Atlanta,
and Antioch, Tennesse. Yelawolf is mixed with causcasian and
Cherokee native american descents. His stage name, Yelawolf, is a tribute to his Cherokee,
Native American heritage.
Yelawolf once attempted to become a professional skateboarder and he was
a dedicated skateboarder for a while. However, he had to quit what he
loved doing due to injuries he received skating. In 2005 he released
an album called, “Creekwater” independently and in 2007 Sony BGM released
a promotional single for him called, “Kickin’”. In 2007 he began to
release mixtapes independently. He was signed to Columbia Records for
a short period of time in 2007 but he left that same year. He was
disillusioned by the major label experienced and returned to the
underground scene and released mixtapes and music via MySpace.
Yelawolf popped back up on the scene in 2010 when he appeared on a
song called, “Down This Road” on a Bizzarre album called,
“Friday night at St. Andrews”. He also appeared on a track with
Big Boi, produced by Andre 3000, called, “You Ain’t No DJ”. His
most recent feature was on Paul Wall’s most recent studio album,
“Heart of a Champion”. Yelawolf appeared on a track called, “Live It”.
Other rappers appearing on the track are Jay Electronica and Raekwon.
In 2010 Yelawolf also signed with Interscope records. On
November 23, 2010 Yelawolf released his first studio album
called, Trunk Muzik 0-60. This is his first project to be released
under a major label and it was released under Ghet-O-Vision Entertainment
and Interscope Records. Yelawolf 2011 is finally emerging into the
spotlight this year and numerous prominent rappers have co-signed
for him, including Eminem. Yelawold says he would love to work
with Eminem one day. He is described by Mike Bigga to be a mixture
of musical legends such as Outkast and Lynyrd Skynrd. He has a
pure southern sound which is also unique.
