J. Cole was born Jermaine Cole in Fayetteville, North Carolina. J.Cole is known as a rapper and producer and he
was the first rapper signed to Jay-Z Roc Nation recording label. He was popularized by his two mixtapes entitled,
“The Welcome Up” released in 2007 and “Warm Up” released in 2009. Some may be familiar with his hit single, “Who Dat”.
J. Cole was raised by his mother in North Carolina and his hometown has had a lot of influence on his
musical sound and style. He started rapping at age 12 when his cousin came to visit and showed up a few
things about rhyming. By the time he was 15 he had filled composition notebooks with raps and asked his
mother to buy him a beat machine. He desperately wanted to create his own music and fortunately his mother
agreed and bought him the machine. He spent most of his free time creating beats and music that later evolved
into the music he does today.
J. Cole went on to college and decided to continue to follow his dreams. He attended St. John’s University
with scholarships with the idea that he would be close to the music industry in New York City. After
graduating college Magna Cum Laude, he released his debut mixtape called, “The Come Up”. He rapped and
told stories of college days and a variety of other topics.
The 24 year old J. Cole 2011 is known for his diversity, storytelling, and wide range of lyrical content.
He is currently working on his debut album and he just dropped a mixtape called, “Friday Night Lights”.
He and Jay-Z are on a journey to change the face of rap music through the Roc Nation label with
J. Cole 2011 music, along with the music of newly signed label mates. Songstress Rhianna, 9 year old
Willow Smith, and Jay Electronica are among other new signees to Roc Nation
