Curren$y, also known as The Hot Spitta, was actually the first talent to be signed to Young Money Ent. Curren$y,
whose real name is Shante Anthony Franklin, is from New Orleans, Louisiana. His brother is a former member of
the 504 Boyz, Mr. Marcelo. Marcelo’s connections with Not Limit Records led to Curren$y 2011 forming a friendship with
rapper C-Murder and being signed to TRU Records and the 504 Boyz. He appeared on a few tracks with the group but
the work was considered minor and he was credited as the “504 Boyz featuring Currency”. The upcoming rapper
began to get discouraged and when his friend, C-Murder was sentence to life in prison for murder, he gave up on rap.
Curren$y gained an intrest in skateboarding and fashion for a while but when he met up with legendary
rap star Lil Wayne in 2005, he was encouraged to give the rap game another try. Curren$y and Lil Wayne had
attended elementary school together and Wayne could not believe that his childhood friend had stopped rapping.
Shortly after, Lil Wayne and Curren$y began to record together and soon Lil Wayne offered his friend a deal with
Young Money Ent. Curren$y then began to appear on several of Lil Wayne’s mixtapes as well as a Soulja Slim album.
Since then Curren$y 2011 has released several mixtapes including “Independence Day” and his debut album,
“Music To Fly To”. He stayed with Young Money until 2007 but he left because he was not receiving proper
recognition and promotion. He is now signed with Fly Society which he co-created with Terry Kennedy first
as a clothing company, but later developed into a music label. One of his latest albums is called,
“The Jet Flies” and was released with Amalgam Digital. He is also a member of hip hop super-group,
Center Edge Territory, along with Mos Def and Jay Electronica.
Curren$y’s latest album was released in 2010 and is called, “Pilot Talk”. “Pilot Talk 2” is anticipated to
be released on November 22, 2010.
