Rising rapper Big Sean was born in Santa Monica, California on March 25, 1988. His real name is
Sean Michael Leonard Anderson and he was signed with Kanye West’s GOOD Music in 2007. He and his mother moved
to Detroit, Michigan where he grew up when he was just two months old. Raised by his mother, Big Sean attended
the Detroit Waldorf School for the arts as a small child and then later he went on to attend Cass Technical High School.
He met his mentor, an older teenager named Sean Menifee who recognized that Sean had a talent for wordplay.
Sean Menifee began to call the future rapper “Big Sean” as a joke because he was actually much smaller than his
mentor, also named Sean. Later in his high school years he was fortunate to develop a relationship with a
Detroit radio station, 102.7 FM and he was able to show off his rap skills each week in the station’s rap contest.
In 2005 Kanye West happened to have an interview at 102.7 FM. Big Sean knew that Kanye was there and decided
to go to the station and perform a freestyle for him. Kanye reluctantly let Big Sean perform 16 bars as he
headed out of the radio station. Eventually when they reached the doors of the station Kanye West paused and
began to bob his head. Big Sean was able to give West a demo and two years later, he was signed to Good Music.
In 2001 he dropped his first mixtape called “Finally Famous: The Mixtape”. This was the source os hit single
“Getcha Some” which led to media attention for the upcoming rapper. His second mixtape was called “U Know Big Sean”
and was released on April 16, 2009. His next mixtape was released August 31, 2010 and was called
“Finally Famous Vol. 3 B.I.G.”. This mixtape featured appearances from Bun B, Chip tha Ripper, Curre$y,
Tyga, Drake, Asher Roth, and more.
Big Sean 2011 debut album is called “Finally Famous” and will be released at an unknown date. The album
features appearances from stars such as Kanye himself, Kid Cudi, Pharrell, Mr. Hudson, The Game,
Rick Ross, Drake, The Dream, and several more. His first single from the album is entitled,
“What U Doin’” and it was released on August 3rd this year.
