The skateboarding lifestyle inspired brand, Zoo York clothing was founded in 1993 by three skateboarders named Rodney Smith,
Eli Morgan Gessner, and Adam Schatz. The three skateboarders teamed up and gained inspiration from the rapidly growing
Zoo York culture in New York City. The Zoo York clothing brand was inspired by a unique social movement influenced by the
unforgiving streets of New York and the colorful combination of diverse cultures. The artists of Zoo York came alive in
Manhattan’s Riverside Park building an elaborate scene with aerosol cans, skateboards, bumping music, and creativity.
By the 80s Zoo York clothing came to symbolize the underground artists in NYC, the skateboarders, punks, and other
creative outlets. The Zoo York revolution was in full effect while graffiti artists left their mark on trains,
DJs perfected their skills on the turn tables, and skaters claimed legendary places like Astor, Washington Square,
and Brooklyn Banks.
The founders of the clothing brand Zoo York clothing gained inspiration from the hip-hop and skateboarding graffiti scenes
that were rapidly evolving in the New York. The result was a product that captured the dark and grittiness of
New York City. Zoo York clothing began with simple decks and tees but the line grew into an all out streetwear collection.
Zoo York is known for its military surplus, urban-athletic style, and for its sturdy design that is made for the
rugged terrain of the city.
Today Zoo York clothing has evolved into a globally recognized brand. The East coast attitude and dialect it uses in its
clothing is unbreakable. Zoo York also continues to be heavily influenced by the skateboarding culture,
graffiti art, hip-hop, punk, and everything that unites those aspects. The Zoo York clothing brand consists of a
wide range of casual looks for men and women while incorporating military imagery and Zoo York icons.
The Zoo Crew includes the original NYC graffiti artists, designers, music artists, new and old school
skateboarders, and some of the big names in the BMX and surf communities. The Zoo Crew continues to support the
Zoo York clothing brand strongly.
