Coogi clothing has been recognized worldwide as a legendary clothing line, and is now recognized as a
top hip hop clothing line. Coogi clothing started 36 years ago and was founded by Australia born
Jacky Taranto. Coogi was not associated with the urban streetwear industry until many years later.
Coogi however has always been known for bright colors, bold patterns, woven designs, and textures.
Jacky Taranto started the Coogi brand in 1969 as a top of the line menswear brand. Coogi did
not come on to the scene of hip hop and urban fashion until the 90’s. The Notorious BIG, whose
real name is Christopher Wallace, considered one of the best rappers to have lived, introduced
Coogi clothing to his fans. A familiar line from one of Notorious BIG’s songs goes,
“I stay Coogi down to the socks.” After Biggie said that in his song, hip hop fans everywhere
started wearing Coogi. In the 90’s Coogi was at one of its all times highs.
After the sudden rise in popular with the hip hop community, Coogi clothing was becoming worn
by more and more celebrities. John Denver and Muhammad Ali rocked Coogi clothing during those days.
Today you will find Russell Simmons, LL Cool J, Megan Good, Jay Z, and others rocking Coogi looks.
After the success of the 90’s Coogi clothing took a turn in 2001. The company began to
have financial problems and Taranto sold the brand to US investors for almost $25 million.
Jacky Taranto was apparently in debt, despite the fact that Coogi clothing was earning
more than $45 million per year.
Today Coogi clothing has still survived and it is regarded as luxury clothing because of
how long it has been around. Coogi clothing has even been recognized in the
Smithsonian Institute for its superior fabric, design, and manufacture. The curator of
Textiles from the Smithsonian has asserted that, “Coogi represents to me and the
Cooper Hewitt one of the highest levels of technique and design.”
